fIRE

Whilst working recently at The Radisson Blu Hotel in Stansted I had the pleasure of photographing The Halo Entertainment’s fire artists as they performed.  As great as the show was visually, straight on camera flash pretty much murders the art inherent in such a performance.  Shooting available light leaves you with the dilemma of exposing for the artist or the fire – you can’t have both. I decided to use an off-camera flash as a hard, unmodified light source to retain the drama. Exposing for the flame and adding the light (the Nikon SB-900 controlled via Yongnuo wireless trigger) at 90 degrees to the performers gave a much more pleasing result befitting of the show. If you are looking for Fire Artists (and let’s face it, who isn’t?) you now know where to go :)

Ely Cathedral At Night

I was recording at Blueshed studios in Soham yesterday http://www.blueshedstudios.co.uk/ when the Sound Engineer Nigel told us about him lighting the Octagon at Ely Cathedral and how it was worth a look. ( He also knows his lighting and I’m looking at stage lighting for the new video I’m shooting with The Avon Guard) I vaguely mentioned I may go and capture a few images if the chance arose. The chance did indeed arise and here they are :)

Newmarket Racecourse Wedding Photographer – Emily and Stu

Newmarket Racecourse Wedding Photographer – Introducing Wedfest!

I had already been to the races at Newmarket  but this was my first time as a Newmarket Racecourse Wedding Photographer! I’d visited the course before with Em and Stu for their pre wedding shoot (click here to view)  so come the wedding I was nicely familiar with the place. The beautiful couple got married in an event that would come to be known as WEDFEST where they teamed a wedding ceremony in The Hong Kong Suite at Newmarket Racecourse with their very own wedding festival in Isleham. There’s a lot to commend about racecourse weddings, not least getting to take pictures on the track itself.  I was lucky enough to photograph the all important Bridal Party Half Furlong on The Rowley Mile course with the winners (Emily and Stu of course :) posing victoriously at the winning post. We got everyone together for a group photo in the winners enclosure before heading back to  Isleham.  Emily spends her days as a visual designer so, unsurprisingly, all things Wedfest looked good. The day was a triumph of both form and function with camping, marquees, a superb ice cream van courtesy of Sweet Ally Scoops, Dan’s Bar and Ely’s best fish and chips.
There was a Lego sponge cake (not actually sponge made from Lego although with the proliferation of Lego products I suspect it’s only a matter of time..),  games, live music and enough bunting to stretch from Ely to Dover. And donkeys. Donkeys are cool. They were actually Em’s family donkeys just in case I give the erroneous impression they hired donkeys for the event! The pair also were clever enough to rehearse a first dance routine and elevate theirs way above the ordinary. As I packed up for the evening, walking back to load various bits and pieces into my car,  I noticed the fabulous night sky. At that moment I decided to get my tripod and capture a picture of the stars as they looked on Em and Stu’s wedding night for all eternity.  You could scroll to the bottom now to see the shot but I’d suggest you get there at the end of viewing their fabulous wedding . I recommend a pinch of salt when you read that a photographer had a “..wonderful day!” photographing a wedding  but I suspect my day was about as good as it gets :)

Dovecliff Hall Hotel Wedding Photographer – Hannah and Rob Get Married!

Dovecliff Hall Hotel Wedding Photographer

Having shot Hannah’s twin sister’s wedding in Ely (see here!) I was fortunate enough to be asked to be Hannah and Rob’s Dovecliff Hall Hotel Wedding Photographer. Dovecliff Hall Hotel is a beautiful Georgian Manor House in seven acres of beautiful gardens and overlooks the River Dove. It makes for an excellent wedding venue and is as elegant inside as it is grand outside. It is also an exclusive use venue so you pretty much own it for the day!
We started with the preparations in Hannah’s room with only a ten second  walk down the stairs to get us to the church on time. Well, not the church really! The wedding took place in The Orangery Room with the Groom Rob getting to do his own walk down the aisle before the arrival of Hannah. Not something you see every day :).
From the ceremony it was out into the courtyard for what was, possibly, the highlight of Hannah’s day.. Admittedly you’d think (hope?) the highlight would be marrying her handsome sweetheart but said sweetheart (Rob, for those not paying attention..) had sorted out a big surprise for his new bride. Hannah is a big fan of the film Top Gun and a particular fan of the Porsche 356 Speedster driven by Charlie (played in the film by Kelly McGillis). Unbeknown to her Rob had managed to track one down thanks to power of the internet and have it arrive at the venue to take Hannah for a post ceremony spin. If you are going to do something it pays to start as you mean to go on and this was a very good start to married life!
After dinner we made a few bride and groom portraits in the Hotel itself and were then entertained by the quite fabulous, and ridiculously young, Luca Gallone. Luca is a nineteen year old magician of no little skill and he left a lot of dumbfounded people in his wake. Dumbfounded and very impressed. If you get a chance to see him then I recommend you take it. My night was finished after the first dance so,  after bidding all farewell, I was off on the journey from Staffordshire back to Ely. In my car. And listening to Darklands by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Repeatedly. A good way to end the day :)

Ely Register Office Wedding Photographer – Kate and Chris :)

Ely Register Office Wedding Photographer

I’ve known Kate for several years now. We met when her son used to go the same toddler groups as my son Vinny. Although the toddler groups are a thing of the past we still see each other on occasions and I was delighted to be her and Chris’ Ely Register Office Wedding Photographer for their Big Day.

Considering Ely Register Office is less than ten minutes from my house I spend far more time photographing weddings in London! My New Year resolution might be to make sure I start shooting more locally.. The day was actually even less travel for me than would otherwise be the case as I joined the wedding party on a coach from Kate’s to take us to Ely. No car, all good :). It was to be a cold and wet winter’s day and brollys and wellies were wisely packed. We were out of the coach and into The Tennyson Room for the ceremony. We exited to the back garden of the Office to grab a few pictures but the cold was sufficient to encourage people back on to the coach for the trip to the reception meal. Back on the coach and away we go.
The reception meal took place at The Anchor Inn in Sutton near Ely and the website leads with the following quote..

“….a little bit of heaven anchored in Fenland”
Paddy Burt – Daily Telegraph.

The surrounds in winter are very picturesque in that stark Fenland way in winter and this added to the already cosy feeling of the Inn. More importantly, the food was marvellous :). Waiting for the rain to go off was a wait in vain so Kate and Chris heroically ventured outside and up along the bank of the canal for some rainy wedding day pictures. Here both the brolly and wellies earned their keep. Clever Kate!
After all was fed and done (I can’t tell whether that’s clever or just awful..) we were back on the coach for the trip back to the house for some cake cutting and a little champagne.
