Whilst working recently at The Radisson Blu Hotel in Stansted I had the pleasure of photographing The Halo Entertainment’s fire artists as they performed. As great as the show was visually, straight on camera flash pretty much murders the art inherent in such a performance. Shooting available light leaves you with the dilemma of exposing for the artist or the fire – you can’t have both. I decided to use an off-camera flash as a hard, unmodified light source to retain the drama. Exposing for the flame and adding the light (the Nikon SB-900 controlled via Yongnuo wireless trigger) at 90 degrees to the performers gave a much more pleasing result befitting of the show. If you are looking for Fire Artists (and let’s face it, who isn’t?) you now know where to go :)
