Helen had come back from the UAE to get married in England, and Boda had come with her. For a lot of the guests, it was the first time they’d met him. That’s a particular kind of wedding day, one where introductions are still happening while the ceremony is about to start, where the room is figuring itself out even as the formalities begin. Those days tend to have a good energy to them.
Sprowston Manor Hotel in Norfolk gave them a proper setting for it. Grand without being stiff, the kind of place that holds a big group comfortably.
The grounds on arrival. Brick, fountain, manicured edges. It photographs well in almost any light, and the day had a bit of both.

Helen in front of the mirror, family and friends behind her in the reflection. There’s a lot going on in a frame like that, everyone gathered, everyone watching, but she’s looking at herself, which is exactly where her attention should be.

A lot of the guests were meeting Boda for the first time that day. You could see it in the handshakes, warm, a little curious, the kind that go on a beat longer than usual. He handled it well.

The two of them outside, laughing at something, both looking up. I don’t know what was funny. I don’t need to. That’s the frame.

The sparkler tunnel at the end of the night is the one everyone expects. What I didn’t expect was Helen’s salute as she walked out of the ceremony as a newly married woman. That one I had to be quick for. It summed her up pretty well.

Helen and Boda moved back to the UAE after the wedding. About a year later, I got a message, they had a son, and would I do his photos. I did. It’s a good thing when a wedding day is the start of something you get to keep up with.
